Full Description
{1} A shallow lock (No. 33) of unusual construction. Its primary purpose was to protect the canal from any surge in the River Cherwell which crosses the canal at the same level on the other side of the bridge. Soon after it was built in 1790, it was enlarged to its present lozenge shape, with a breadth of about 6m at the widest point, compensating for its very small (less than 30cm) fall.
