Full Description
{1} The original house on the plot was known as Court Farm – of uncertain date, but there are references to it in 1767 and in 1799 it was included in a marriage settlement of one of the Thornton family. ‘a messuage or tenement at the north end of Kingsthorpe with barns, stables, outhouses….’
The house was later re-built by the Thornton family and became known as Court House (it is marked on OS maps from 1885 by this name). In 1885 Irvine Walker Douglas is listed as resident.
Conjecture (in Kingsthorpe – A royal manor explored, Tony Horner) that it may have been the venue for the Manorial Courts prior to the building of the Town House.
Built of Northamptonshire Sandstone with a clay tiles roof and fine gabled elevations. It stands in grounds of approx 3/4 acre.
{2} Building described in 1799 marriage settlement of TR Thornton to Susannah Fremeaux: Court Farm ‘a messuage or tenement at the north end of Kingsthorpe with barns, stables, outhouses etc with 3 several closes 4a, 2r y estimation adjoining the premises and homestead. Property known as Court Farm then Cout House after rebuilding and then as Wardington Court.
The author of a piece in William Hone’s Year Book of 1832 wrote of the building ‘The last building on his right was Court Farm, which had an impressive entrance gateway of stone and a side doorway that he ascribes to the transition period between Gothic and Renaissance.’ This building may have been the venue for the Manorial Courts prior to the building of the Town House.
Described by George James de Wilde in Rambles Roundabout and Poems. In 1767 farmhouse (Court Farm) was in the ownership of Richard Wood.
