Full Description

{1} "Stone scatter and Roman pottery (grey and colour-coated wares, abundant gritted wares) found in January 1966 at SP 965 794. Probably on an unknown Roman road; there is a mound or ridge in the field. Possibly the position of a pavement (SP 98 SE 4) found in 1736".

{4} A piece of Romano-British tessellated pavement 1.5 x 3ft was found near Drayton House in 1736. "Engraved by Vetue for Lady Germaine."

{5} The fragment of pavement is now in the library at Drayton House. The owner believes that it may have been found in an area of early quarrying in the area of SP967804.

{6} A slight scatter of Romano-British pot sherds and building debris was seen at SP96507935 during field investigation c.1969. The mound or ridge could not be identified.

{7} A scatter of Roman pottery and building material, covering an area of 70 square m., has been found. It is possible that this is the site 'near Drayton House' where a small piece of tessellated pavement is said to have been found in 1736. However although the original source for this information was said to be in the Minutes of the Society of Antiquaries, no record can now be traced.

{8} The "mound or ridge" has been thought to be the possible meeting-place of Huxlow Hundred. In 1934 it is described as 'a low mound with some large stones lying on the surface and foundations riddled with rabbit-holes'. The three fields to the N were known as "Huxlow Closes".

{9} A slight scatter of RB potsherds and building debris seen at SP 96507935 during field investigation. The mound/ridge could not be identified. D Jackson (MOW) is not available for consultation and there is no evidence for a Roman road hereabouts.

{10} The sherds found in 1966 were mainly 3rd to 4th century.

{11} NH 81 Roman pottery, building debris, ?road and ?mosiac. Possible villa site.

{12} A piece of tessellated pavement, 3ft X 1.5ft in size, is said to have been found in 1736 near to Drayton House. This refers to Minutes of the Society of Antiquaries which have not been found. Gough says that the mosaic was engraved by Vertue for Lady Germaine.
