Monument record 849/0/67 - Medieval boundary ditches, Church Lane
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Archaeological evaluation identified probable medieval property or field boundaries. A number of other features, including pits and postholes, were undated but probably contemporary. The features contained 12th-13th century pottery and some animal bone. Four worked flint fragments of probable Neolithic / Bronze Age and Mesolithic or Upper Palaeolithic date were all found residually within the medieval ditches. Subsequent observation of groundworks identified a single pit, which contained a sherd of St Neots ware pottery dating c 900-1100 AD.

Full Description
{1} Archaeological evaluation identified two medieval ditches on a north east - south west alignment, although one may have been turning. Both contained medieval pottery and animal bone.
The ditches probably represent property or field boundaries.
Three undated ditches on a north east - south west alignment were also identified. The ditches contained the same fills and were on the same alignment as ditches in the other trenches which could be dated to the medieval period, so may be contemporary. Undated pits and postholes were also found.
Residual flints - a tertiary blade and three flakes - were found in the medieval ditches in trench 2.
{2} Archaeological observation was undertaken during groundworks. A pit which was 0.95m wide and 0.45m deep. Its fill of dark grey-brown silty clay contained a single sherd of St Neots ware pottery, dated to c 900-1100 AD. The pit appears to be within the late Saxon/medieval landscape identified during the evaluation and maybe associated with the medieval house platforms recorded along Church Lane but now destroyed.
