Full Description

{1} In Trench 3 there were two features cut into the clay, consisting of a small gully and an indeterminate feature, only the edge of which was exposed in the trench. These features were not excavated, but probably date to the Roman period. They were sealed by a layer which contained sherds of late C2nd to early C3rd Roman pottery and an iron nail. On top of these had been laid a uniform layer of relatively flat limestone cobbles suggestive of a metalled surface, possibly a yard. This in turn was sealed by a layer containing late C2nd to C4th Roman pottery above which was laid another surface of mortar and limestone pebbles.
