Full Description
{1} Located at the westernmost limits of the site was an irregular hollow 25m x 23m x 1.5m deep and containing a sequence of clayey fills with late Iron Age grog-tempered pottery recovered from the lower fills. Cutting of this hollow may originally have been for clay or ore extraction, although mottling on the edges of the feature and within the surrounding natural deposits may represent animal trampling and later use as a waterhole. Feeding into the pit from the north-west wsa a broad, shallow ditch, and from the south-east a narrow U-shaped ditch. The latter contained late Iron Age pottery, including an almost complete (pre-Belgic type) ovoid jar, the contents of which appeared to have been burnt, suggesting a domestic or even ritual use.
