Full Description
{1} Trial trench excavation was undertaken in the gardens of Holdenby House. Four ditches, located in three trenches, and a stone-rubble deposit were all sealed beneath subsoil deposits. No dating evidence was found in three of the ditches, but late Saxon pottery and animal bone fragments were found in the stone layer. Medieval pottery dating to the 11th century was found in one ditch in Trench 7. Given the similar stratigraphy, it was considered that all the features were likely to be of a similar late Saxon/early medieval date. The remains probably relate to the medieval settlement which originally stood around the church before the gardens were created in the 16th century.
