Full Description
{1{ Fieldwalking survey identified a scatter of struck flint across the whole of the field, with identifiable pieces of Mesolithic/early Neolithic and earlly Bronze Age date. There were clusters of two or three pieces but no concentrations sufficient to indicate working or occupation areas. A single sherd of Roman pottery was found, though it did not overlie any of the enclosures.
{2} Trial trench evaluation and subsequent excavation were undertaken in the area of the proposed gallop. The remains of three penannular enclosures, with diameters ranging between 12-16m, were identified in the north-western quadrant of the proposed gallop. Entrances of two of the enclosures faced east. One of the enclosures had two phases; pottery from the earlier phase dated to the early Iron Age, whilst that from the later phase dated to the middle Iron Age. The enclosures were probably round house drip gullies. A larger rectangular enclosure appears to have enclosed one of the penannular enclosures. A probable boundary ditch was found to the south of the enclosure group and may be associated with the settlement to the north [9942].
The geophysical survey indicated that a further penannular enclosure lay c80m to the east of the excavated features and further anomalies 190m to the south-east may be related.
