Full Description

{1} Excavation of early-middle Saxon features by D.N.Hall.

{2} Plan Fig.67 shows location of "early Saxon occupation" more or less at the south end of the High Street.

{3} Middle Saxon pottery has been excavated from four sites in the village; the churchyard, Beacon Hill, Priory Road estate, and the paddock behind Cromwell House in London Road. A limited excavation at the last-named site revealed partial plans of wooden houses. The pottery is still handmade, very hard, and black with a lot of sand in the fabric. It dates from before c.850 when it was superseded by a wheel-made shelly pottery known as St Neots ware.

{4} Saxon site (31) lies immediately south-west of the village, and east of the Roman settlement. An occupation site, said to be of middle Saxon date, has been found here, together with pits and other features. [HER note 10/02/2015: following email exchange with D.Hall established that RCHME quoted ngr is incorrect and should be c.80m to the north-east.]

{6} Wollaston Site 2. Remains of late Saxon wooden buildings and occupation debris were found in a field off London Road, known as the Doctors Field. NGR SP905625.
