A large number of Roman coins were found here in the 19th century, along with much charcoal and iron slag. During quarrying in 1957 workmen recalled large quantities of slag, pits with burnt sides and described pottery kilns and a square, stone-founded building

Full Description

{1} Features observed in 1957 during ironstone extraction; pottery kiln & a large quantity of Romano-British pot sherds; extensive areas of burnt earth & charcoal & iron slag of a possible iron working site;

{2} Around SP 93399340 a large quantity of pottery and extensive area of burnt earth were discovered in 1957 and said to be the probable remains of a kiln. Nearby, Roman coins together with much charcoal and iron slag, were found in the 19th century;

{4}{5} Building detroyed by quarrying in 1957; no details known; large quantities of slag suggesting ironworking;

{3} A large site (half a mile to the south-east of Mon 3060), at SP934935 was destroyed by quarrying in 1956-7. Workmen recall large quantities of slag, heaps of slaked lime, and pits with burnt sides dug into ironstone. Possible pottery kilns were also described and remains of a stone building reported to be square in plan. A number of finds have been reported from this area in the past including a hoard of coins (VCH 1 p.216).

{6} Finds; pre 1859; ironworking; 107 Roman coins including those of Julia and Julia Augusta, Carausius and Constantine; plus charcoal and iron slag;

site name: Blacklands;

{8} Ro pot found about 1957 by Stewart and Lloyds during iron ore quarrying.

{9} A probable Roman Kiln site was discovered during bulldozing operations in May 1957 when a great number of potsherds were discovered. Examination of the site showed signs of extensively burnt earth, and sand and clay were found quite close to the site, and also on the banks of a stream.

{10} Site a former quarry, now infilled. The present location of the sherds was not determined.

{11} 'Blacklands' field is centred at SP 934935.
