Summary

Domesday survey records a mill at Hollowell. The last miller recorded in 1906. In 1913 the mill house was demolished as part of a scheme to build a reservoir. By 1929, the mill was derelict and in 1964 it was altered for ue as a barn and rebuit as a dwelling in the 1990s.

Full Description

{1} Post med stone building; altered for use as barn; course of tail race indistinct; embankment for head race still traceable; building now demolished.

{4} Domesday survey records at Holewell the site of a mill held by the Earl of Morton.
1345 William de Holwell complained that 22 persons broke into his close and mill at Holewell and carried away timber of the mill.
1815 John Ward of Holwell insured £200 on his new dwelling house with Millhouse ad two tables adjoining.
1906 Abraham Pittem, the last miller at Hollowell to have an entry in trade directories.
1913 Mill purchased by Northampton Corporation. Mill house, which stood in the meadow in front of the miil, was deolished as part of a scheme for a new reservoir.
1929 Mill in a derelict state 'The original grindstones are in position in the upper storey and some fragments of the latticed windows remain'.
1964 Building altered for use as a barn, with ground floor windows bricked in.
1990s Rebuilt as a dwelling.
Not marked on historic maps until 1834.
The house is a three-storey brick building with grey slated gable roof. On the east side, three semi-circuar windows in the upper storey and two windows in the second storey, all of which correspond in position and size with those originally in the mill. In the first storey, the original size and position of openings have been retained except for the enlargement of a small and low window, which has been opened up to accommodate the front door. A chimney stack has been inserted near the south end of the roof. This gable end has evidence of earlier stonework.
