Summary

A complex of cropmarks of probable Neolithic and Bronze Age date have been recorded. A Neolithic henge and two of the barrows are Scheduled Monuments. The buried remains of two bowl barrows and a henge, identified from aerial photographs. The henge is roughly circular in plan and measures 42 metres in diameter. The enclosing ditch is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs. Traces of a possible inner ditch can also be identified. A gap in the south eastern section of the outer ditch may represent a causeway. The remains of the barrows lie south east of the henge, their surrounding ditches also appearing as cropmarks on aerial photographs. The barrow closest to the henge measures 16 metres in total diameter while the second is 22 metres in diameter.

Full Description

{2} Crop marks photographed from the air by J.Pickering, The Outwoods, Hinckley in 1970. SP 690791 Oval enclosure with possibly other crop marks to the East.

{3} Flint Working Site and Roman Settlement (centred SP 690791), N. of the village, on clay at 182 m above OD. Air photographs (in NMR) show cropmarks covering about 1.5 hectares. They are rather indistinct but include one small square enclosure 30 m. across with rounded corners, a number of penannular ditches and other ditches and possible enclosures. Further S.E. (at SP 692790) the same photographs show a larger rectangular enclosure covering about 075 hectares, orientated N.-S. with other smaller enclosures to the S. and S.W. Many worked flints and a scatter of Roman grey ware have been found in the area.
