Full Description

{1} Nobottle means "new building"

{3} The settlement gave its name to the Hundred of Nobottle Grove. Little is known of the history of Nobottle but its name, 'new building'. Indicates that it may be a relatively late settlement in the area. It is first noted in 1086 when Domesday Book lists it with a recorded population of nine. Thereafter nothing is known of its size until 1673 when eleven people paid the Hearth Tax. Bridges, writing in about 1720, said there were twelve houses there. Today the hamlet is much the same size, though its houses are somewhat scattered.

Earthwork remains of settlement centre SP 671632: sub-rectangular enclosure divided into four closes by shallow ditches. Other possible closes to the south. Hollow way continues line of Glassthorpe track north, curving uphill to meet modern Harlestone road and forms boundary of main settlement enclosure. Air photographs in NMR.

{7} Collection of photographs of buildings in the village.
