Full Description
{1} There is an ancient mansion belonging to the family of Blowfield supposed to have been a religious house; there are still [in 1711] remaining arched windows and a chamber at the west end, now a dove house, called the chapel chamber; 4 acres of meadow called Nuns' Acres belong to it; 1545-6 fine on Blofield Farm; 1393 ‘Nonnesdole’ part of Stamford Priory lands;
{2} The nuns of Stamford had an estate here, called Blofield. In 1545 a rent of 20½d. and lands in Warmington were granted to Richard and Robert Taverner. There was a local family named Blofield, and Ishmael Blofield, gent., died in 1636, holding a tenement called Ederley Place, descending to him from his father William and grandfather Thomas. He left sons, William and Ishmael. The remains of the grange and chapel of Blofield in Warmington (Name TL0891) were visible in the farmhouse there in Bridges' time.
{4} 'Blofield Grange and Chapel'. The Ordnance Survey archaeological investigators were unable to locate 'Blofield Grange', but the Warmington Survey of 1621 suggests this is the farm at TL 073908;
{5} The land was given to the nuns of St Michael’s Priory, Stamford in the 12th century;
{6} Local enquiries proved negative. The architectural features were not identified.
