Summary

The site of a Roman building, or villa is indicated by building debris. Saxon pottery scatters have also been recovered, perhaps suggesting the presence of an Anglo-Saxon settlement in the vicinity. Cropmarks of ditches, possibly enclosures, have been identified immediately to the south-east.

Full Description

{1} At SP729763 there is a good villa site with much building stone and hypocaust tile; adjacent to it are areas of Saxon pottery.

{2} Site M6 is Romano-British and Saxon in date.

{3} Roman Building (SP 729763), in the W. of the parish on Northampton Sand at 155m. above OD. Roman pottery, building stone and hypocaust tiles have been discovered. To the S.E. air photographs (in NMR) show very indistinct cropmarks of at least two sub-rectangular enclosures and some short lengths of ditches.

Saxon Settlement (?) (SP 729763), found with the Roman building. Areas of early Saxon pottery have been found in the vicinity.

{4} SP 729 762. Seven coins dating from the Gallic Empire to three issues of the House of Valentinian; also 50 sherds of pottery, iron, nails, two lead dice, tegula, and five tile fragments.

{7} (SP733763) Prehistoric, Iron Age or Romano-British field ditches discovered in Maidwell Lodge grounds in 1976.
