Full Description

{1} Consists of 2 distinct houses adjoining. The first, early C18, low 2 storey, coursed rubble, fairly steep stone slate roof, flat verge on west gable, good stone chimney stack on top. 1 hipped dormer towards the west end. Central doorway, small flat hood on 2 consoles, shallow reveals, door with incised panels, rectangular fanlight of 4 panes. Right of entrance 1 window only, tall sash. This room appears to rise full height to the eaves. Over the entrance is a small sash window in a wooden case, ooden lintel. Left of centre, 3 blind windows to ground floor and 1st floor has 1 window similar to that over the doorway slightly larger, left of this is a blind window, right of it another with only a small opening at the top. The second house is a very high building of 2 storeys with a parapet screening the roof. A large front with few openings. Central entrance, moulded architrave, panelled frieze above, small flat hood on 2 consoles, fielded panels on reveals, soffit and door. 5 window , 3 blocked on 1st floor, 2 and at least 1 blocked on ground floor. Flat arched heads, glazing bars. Heavy creeper cover. Small walled garden in front. A barn of 2 storeys with pantile roof adjoins the west end. 1 opening and a carriage doorway. House fenestration partly obscured by creeper. Nos 2 to 6 (even) together with the barn adjoining No 4 form a group with No 21 St Osyths Lane.

{4} Heritage Assessment undertaken after No 4 and No 6 were brought back into the same ownership. A late 17th-century cottage was joined in 1710 to a four-square gentrified building comprising four polite rooms and a service range. All three progressed as a genteel residence with service wings to either side. Around 1730 some alterations to the fenestration left the frontage more private and unified the interiors with a notable range of panelling. Just before 1810, to judge by the neat and sensible stair detailing and the evidence of the historic maps, a rear wing was added to the service range, probably to ensure servants to live in. The buildings were the subject of sales in the 1880s but not formally separated off until c1895.
