Summary

An early/mid 19th century watermill situated over a meander bend in the River Nene, North west of Eaglethorpe. The mill is constructed of squared coursed limestone with brick dressings and a double pitch concrete tile roof. It is rectangular in plan and is built over two mill races to the left and right of centre. The building is three stories high with a five window range of cast iron casements under shallow brick arches with three doors to the ground floor. The left gable has a three window range of casements and a central loading door at the first floor. At the apex of the gable is a weatherboarded gantry that overhangs approximately two meters.

Full Description

{1} Watermill. Early/mid C19. Squared coursed limestone with brick dressings and concrete tile roof. Rectangular plan. 3 storeys. 5-window range of cast iron casements under shallow brick arches. Plank doors to centre and far left, under similar heads. 2 mill races pass under building to left and right of centre. Left gable has a 3-window range similar to main front, with central first floor loading door. Projecting gantry at apex of gable is weatherboarded. Interior not inspected.

{5} 1086 Domesday survey records Werminton with one mill rendering 40s and 325 eels.
1125 In the Liber Niger, a description of the manor includes 'also a mill with one yard and 6 acres, rendering 60s and 500 eels'.
1535 A survey of the possessions of Peterborough Abbey in 1535 shows the profits of the watermill at Warmington were valued at £6 13s 4d.
1653 Reference to four watermills with the manor of Warmington.
1838 Mill rebuilt.
1847 Water corn mill, working four pairs of stones, stuated at Warmington, advertised for sale where it was stated that the mill 'holds a larger head than any mill on the stream'.
1862 Freehold water corn mill, known as Warmington Mill, advertised for sale, working four pairs of stones, 'together with two floors above same, comprising granary, flour chamber'. The accompanying dwelling house had a brewhouse and large bakehouse.
1939 Mill reported as still standing, in working order.
1951 A small gristing trade still carried on, the tenant of the mill running it as a side-line to his agricultural and electrical engineering businesses. One water-wheel drove a lathe and battery-charging apparatus.
1965 Most of windows broken and parts of broken machinery on ground floor, when was for sale.
2001 Alterations to mill for conversion to other use.
2002 Occupied by 'Fired Earth', a tile retailing business.
