Full Description

{1} Farmhouse, datestone S/1776 for Earl of Strafford and Wentworth. Coursed lias rubble with slate roof. Double depth plan. South elevation, 2-storey 4-window range, asymetrical. Second window from left projecting as 2-storey bay with entrance. Casement windows. Pitched roof with 4 gables has crenellated parapet. Right flanking bay C19. Rounded and quatrefoil decoration, datestone above entrance. North elevation has Dioclecian windows throughout. Built as folly by Earl of Strafford and Wentworth to commemorate the Battle of Bunkers Hill 1775.

{5} It its said that the farmhouse was built as a folly to commemorate the Battle of Bunkers Hill in 1775. Presumably its conversion into a house and farmstead took place later - the style of the stone buildings indicates construction in perhaps the middle of the 19th century. Roof is of blue Welsh slate.

{6} 650m E of Grotto Spinney & on N side of valley is farm constructed in 1776 & named in commemoration of the Battle of Bunker's Hill of 1775; General Sir William Howe who led the British lines at the battle was the 2nd Earl's brother in law; carriage arch flanked by crenellated wall with buttresses leads into the farmyard
