Monument record 1347/4 - Peterborough Abbey Manor, Church Street
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Probably located at Stanwick Manor Farm rather than Stanwick Hall as previously suggested. Repairs recorded in the late 13th and early 14th centuries suggest many of the manorial buildings were built of stone

Full Description
{1}{2}{3} In 1824 the pound was still located below Manor Farm
{4} The chapel was destroyed in 1714.
{5} Almost certainly located at Stanwick Manor Farm. Repairs to the manorial buildings are recorded in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. The hall and main chamber were of stone as was the aisled barn. The roofs of the chapel and bovella (?garderobe) were repaired 'beyond the chambers'. The solar with chapel is recorded as being built by abbot Robert de Lindsey (1214-22). The Stanwick solar and chapel may have still been standing in 1714 when on rebuilding a farmhouse 'an ancient edifice with large windows like church windows was taken down' (Bridges, II, 149-50). There were walls around the courtyard and garden and a stone gatehouse. Other buildings listed are the kiln-house, two stables, ox-house, sheep-cote, chicken-house and the stone pinfold.
{6} Documentary references to a possible manorial medieval chapel and solar may relate to earlier occupation at Stanwick Hall/House.
