Full Description

{3} Field 3 is the former parcel called Barley Croft. The surviving part contains well-defined ridge and furrow, the best preserved example along the proposed bypass route. More detail given.
No significant archaeological remains were detected by the walkover survey. While ridge and furrow survives in several fields it has all been ploughed to some extent and is only poorly preserved. The best surviving example in Field 3 represents only a small part largely lost or disturbed in recent raod and building developments.

{4} A parallel series of weak positive and negative linear magnetic anomalies were detected, aligned north east to south west, and are interpreted as the remains of ridge and furrow cultivation. A number of stronger positive linear magnetic anomalies, with the same alignment, were also detected, which are likely to be magnetically-enhanced soil-filled furrows. The furrows were spaced on average between 8-12m apart. A positive linear magnetic anomaly immediately to the north, aligned north west to south east, may be an associated field boundary.
