Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
Archaeological excavation was undertaken prior to the construction of a sports hall. A medieval ditch system and an associated hollowway, dated to the 13th-16th centuries, may lie near the northern end of Upton deserted medieval village. A later medieval stone structure, a stone-lined pit and adjacent wall, were constructed over the filled ditches. A number of quarry pits at the western end of the site produced pottery, clay tobacco-pipes and glass bottles dating from the late 17th to 19th centuries. Summary from record 5138/0/15: An L-shaped length of wall, with an internal stone-lined pit

Full Description
{1} Archaeological trial trench excavation identified a medieval enclosure ditch, which may represent the north-eastern end of a deserted medieval village, located to the south of the development site, was also revealed. Medieval pottery was recovered from the fill, together with a small quantity of animal bone.
{2} Archaeological excavation undertaken prior to the construction of a sports hall within the grounds of Quinton House School identified remains associated with Upton DMV. The medieval remains included re-cut boundary ditches and later limestone walls, a stone-lined pit and a metalled surface; although the paucity of finds indicates that they were not in the immediate vicinity of a major domestic focus. They do, however, show that medieval ditched plot boundaries extended someway north of the recorded earthworks, as the excavated examples are on similar alignments to the boundaries to the south. This may indicate that the church had stood at one end of a single elongated village, comprising crofts set on either side of a central road
