Full Description
{1} The pottery assemblage runs from the late iron Age through to the medieval period. The majority is of Romano-British 'Kitchen' and 'Table' ware, probably representing a late Iron Age farmstead, the 'higher' quality wares, especially the presence of decorated Samian, suggesting that the site may have had a boom period during the second century AD; possibly due to income generated through provisioning the Roman Army. There is pottery evidence to suggest either continuation or site re-use during the early to mid-Saxon period (5th - 7th centuries AD) however there is a gap in the assemblage between that period and the early medieval wares of the 12th century onwards. This may simply be due to the random nature of the sampling, or could indicate site abandonment at this time.
