Full Description
{1} Beneath a layer of ash and cinders 0.35m thick were layers of gravel and brown clay which had probably formed a bedding some 0.5m thick for the railway track. Both layers abutted the foundations of a substantial limestone wall which may have served as a revetment for the platform. The foundations were 0.8m wide by 1.2m deep and had been set within a broad construction trench. The depth of both the wall and railway bedding was probably due to the need to prevent subsidence into earlier gravel quarries.
