Monument record 6294/1 - London & North Western Railway (Northampton and Peterborough Branch Railway/Nene Valley Railway)

Please read our .

Summary

The Northampton and Peterborough Branch Railway was opened in 1845, the 47.5 miles having taken only 2 years to build. Despite its utility as a through route, it was expensive to maintain, and in the face of increasing road competition it was closed to passengers in 1964 and all goods traffic ceased in 1974. Since 1977, the 7.5 mile section between Yarnton Junction and Peterborough has been privately run by the Nene Valley Railway to run steam trains.
