Full Description
{1} Shows linear pattern of quarrying up to the early C19th on either side of the Stamford Road at Collyweston and Easton on The Hill. There is a small area of quarrying shown on the south side of the road, immediately east of Collyweston, which appears to have been accessed off the main road at the north-east end of the village. There is a small area of quarrying shown immediately east of Collyweston, off the Drove Road.
{2} Uncertain how accurate the mapping is, and may be schematic in nature.
{3} Remains of former quarries at SK 999029, 000030 and 004037. Worked from the earliest times; in the Roman period stone from here was used a roofing material known as Collyweston slate. The slate is a fissile sandy limestone at the base of the Lower Limestone and was either worked in open quarries or mined from small shafts. Remains of both types of working are visible. The blocks of limestone were laid out on the ground, with the bedding planes vertical, and kept watered to prevent drying out. The stone was split by hand and frost action. There are other small quarries in the area of a possibly early date.
{4} The site of extenisive former (traces of quarrying from Roman to the post medieval period) limstone quarrying for 'slates' on the southern eastern edges of Collyweston (two areas centred at SK9958 0246 and SK9988 0284 ) seen as humps and hollows visible on lidar images and mapped as part of the Rutland Roman Villa project. The two areas of visible quarrying are separated by an area of village development with is built over further traces of quarrying.
