Full Description
{1} In 1969, ironstone quarrying at Glendon Bridge Quarry, in Weekley parish led to the discovery of an early Iron Age settlement, defined mainly by a series of 97 postholes, distributed over an area of some 12,000 sq ft. It is possible to isolate several groupings which include six 4-post structures, several 2-post structures and a possible circular or semi-circular structure. Two pits were discovered, one of which was clay-lined. Defining the eastern side of the settlement were two parallel ditches, probably defining a trackway. The ditches may have been associated with a Roman road, although there was no evidence of metalling.
{2} Iron Age and Roman settlement (centred SP 875812). Part of a settlement area extending from Kettering [SP 88 SE 1] N. to Geddington [SP 88 SE 31]. Miscellaneous discoveries from quarrying include Iron Age and Roman coins, three skeletons and a large Iron Age pot in Weekley Hall wood. Recent excavation (SP 874815) revealed 97 post holes suggesting granaries, and two small pits possibly Bronze Age or early Iron Age. A possible ditched trackway was traceable for 30m.
{3} Find of a pedestal urn at Weekley.
{6} Full details of the recent excavation have been published.
