Full Description
{1} Present boundary shown but may have changed over time
{2} Findings in section 4.3 indicate that the original western boundary of the churchyard was less extensive than at present, and that the graveyard was previously bounded along its western side by a cob wall, which followed a line in the plan drawing in Appendix A.
The brickwork of the present wall, which supports the iron and wooden gates into the churchyard, dates from the period 1790-1830. Traces of macadamised surface reported in section 4.4 are of a form that would've been introduced in the 1820s or 1840s and the costumes in the ink sketch (fig. 2) can be dated to the 1830s or 1840s)
Due to the effect of Parliamentary Enclosure, the Industrial Revolution and Napolenic War, Kilsby suffered sever effects of depression between 1790 and 1820 and there were many deaths from starvation, pauper burials and bankruptcies during this period.
It can therefore be suggested that the graveyard was extended somewhere between 1820-1835. There is no easy explanation, however, for the discovery of [horse?] bones beneath the gateway.
