Monument record 8513 - Possible Iron Age settlement and Romano-British Field System

Please read our .

Summary

Excavation undertaken in 2013 identified a cluster of poorly dated features including part of a possible ring gully and several clusters of pits/postholes which were interpreted as broadly Iron Age in date. A later field system was also poorly dated, but considered likely to be Roman. A single pit contained 2nd to 3rd century pottery.

Full Description

{1} The earliest archaeological features were encountered in Area C where the remains of a ditch system were investigated. Although undated these remains probably form part of the Iron Age/Romano-British agricultural landscape, associated with settlements on the higher ground to the south and east of the site.
Although no artefactual remains were found in any of the excavated features they were sealed by the subsoil and their alignment did not conform to that of the post medieval/modern field system. This suggests that they are pre-medieval in date and given the proximity of known prehistoric and Roman sites to the east and south-east of Area C it is therefore likely that the features form part of an Iron Age/Romano-British agricultural ditch system.
