Full Description

{1} The earliest deposits within Trench 9 contained 17 sherds of medieval pottery dating to the C12th to C13th (as well as 5 sherds of residual Roman pottery). These were overlain by a sequence of sandy layers which probably represent medieval floor layers within a building. 21 sherds of pottery were recovered from these, including Potterspury ware dating to the mid C13th to C14th.
These floors were overlain by a further floor of sand and mortar dating to the mid C13th to C14th. The mortar had been burnt possibly indicating a nearby oven or hearth, or burning of the building itself. (It has been suggested that there may have been a bakehouse in this location in the medieval and post medieval period.
