Full Description
{1} The southern part of the excavation trench contained a layer with a cut-off date c.160/170, and some pottery usually associated with the Roman army. Its introduction appears to coincide with the abandonment of civilian settlement in this area and the building of the town’s defences. Seven postholes were recorded in the area of the previous building, the little pottery recovered was all C2nd in date, with a Nene Valley sherd dating from the later C2nd.
There was no pattern to the placement of the postholes expect that they were in the same location as the earlier building slots. This posthole structure was sealed by a C4th layer, so could have existed anytime from the late C2nd onwards.
