Full Description
{1} Observation of the development of a new house found a re-cut ditch, aligned north-west to south-east and perpendicular to the present lane, was likely to have been a property boundary maintained over a considerable period of time. Further ditches, which were aligned along the lane edge, were not excavated but were considered likely to be of the same period. Pits and shallow gullies were present on either side of the plot division.
The presence of small quantities of animal bone and an assemblage of charred plant remains provide further evidence for domestic activity in the vicinity. Free-threshing wheat and oats appear to have been the main cereals cultivated and used during the late Saxon to early medieval period.
The dating evidence indicates there was settlement from the 10th to the 14th centuries.
