Summary

A stone-lined Roman well was excavated in 1953. It had been partially destroyed by the excavation of a clay pit. It was over 3m deep. Roman pottery, roof tile and fragments of leather were recovered from the base.

Full Description

{1} The site of a well located on the western side of 'The Old Brickworks', a clay pit on the southern side of Gayton Road (SP 715 538). It was identified and excavated by Mr Bunch and subsequently recorded by Mrs G Brown. It was over 3m deep, constructed of stone with two large slabs at the base. At the bottom of the well there were pieces of tegula, some large fragments of Samian bowl (form 33), 2nd century grey ware and other sherds as well as hazel nut shells and fragments of leather.
