Monument record 7132/1 - Eastcote Internment & Prisoner of War Camp (First World War)

Please read our .

Summary

Eastcote House and 60 acres of land were acquired during the early stages of the First World War for the establishment of an internment camp for German merchant seaman. After the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915 Eastcote Camp was extended and became a Prisoner of War camp under War Office control. There were possibly up to 2,000 inhabitants which meant that considerable building works were undertaken on site to service them, including wood, brick and stone huts, a complete water-supply and sewage plant, and a hospital. It is also recorded that for recreation the inmates constructed model military landscapes, including a perfect copy of the Dardanelles.
