Full Description
{1}Earthwork; "….entrenchment…."; fieldname.
Lake Meadow; Barton; Near King's Sutton in Lake Meadow and Barton are traces of an entrenchment. A skeleton was dug up there at the time of enclosure.
{2} Earthwork; "….entrenchment….";
To the N of King's Sutton are the partial remains of an ancient double entrenchment (perhaps Norman) in a ground called Barton (coming up the lane from Banbury) and in Lake Meadow.
{3} Hollow way runs east-west across the slope between the road to Banbury and the floodplain of the River Cherwell. Probably because of the Roman coins and burials discovered nearby it has been described as an 'entrenchment'. However the feature is nothing more than an ancient hollow way 12m wide x 1.5m deep passing between ridge and furrow and presumably giving access to the river. It has now been partly destroyed by infilling.
{5}Plan of earthwork on OS map;
{7} This work has neither the constructional appearance or the topographical situation to warrant an archaeological classification. It appears to be no more than a sunken roadway, leading from
SP49593656 to a beast railway crossing at SP49333633. The work has been partly destroyed by modern construction and infilling.
