Full Description

{1} Finds included sherds of C12th to C14th date, two complete jugs thought to be from Brill (Buckinghamshire) and Potterspury, a face-mask from a Lyveden jug, an annular brooch, bronze pins, two seals, an iron key, nails, glass, lead, a silver penny of David II of Scotland, a C15th token, a pottery spindle whorl and an unusual scupture of a monkey with a drum.

{2} Iron objects include nails, half an ox shoe and a well preserved hunting arrow head. Many pieces of iron slag have been found on the floor of the rooms so far uncovered. There are also small clippings of bronze. Sheep and pig predominate among the animal bones but cow and dog are also represented. Pottery belongs to the C13th and C14th and, judging from the variety of wares represented, was drawn from a wide area. The roof had stone tiles, with green glazed ridge tiles with a cocks comb pattern running along the top.

{3} A very fine bone dice with concave sides, a small iron military type arrowhead, a Long Cross silver penny of Edward II (York mint, c.1320), a pottery spindle whorl and a fragment of a marble mortar were found during excavation in 1970.

{4} A good stratified group of pottery was found in 1971 ranging from a sherd of Badorf ware dating to the mid C12th up to early C14th wares. Two large fragments of stone mortars were found, bringing the total to at least three. Also a mica schist hone stone, a fragment of a bone toggle and a fine-rolled bronze strip.

{5} An iron flesh hook, bronze pins, two bronze strap ends (one of which still had fabric adhering to the bronze), a silver penny of King David II of Scotland, a gold and silver button cover, fragments of two glass goblets, a strip of lead with the stamped impression of a silver penny (probably Edward II), and a good group of C14th pottery were recovered by excavation in 1972.

{6} Finds included a small bronze C15th token, a bronze shoelace tag and C14th pottery.

{7} A bronze annular brooch was found outside the north wall of the hall.

{8} An iron flesh hook, bronze pins, two decorated bronze strap ends (one of which still had fabric adhering to the bronze), a silver penny of King David II of Scotland, a gold and silver plated staff tip (dated to the early C15th by B.M.), fragments of two glass goblets, two strips of lead sheeting with the stamped impression of a silver penny (probably Edward II, showing the obverse and reverse), a good group of C14th pottery and bronze shoe tags were recovered by excavation in 1972/3.

{9} Small finds include a bone dice with concave sides, a small iron military type arrowhead, an unstratified long cross silver penny of Edward II (York mint, c.1320), a pottery spindle whorl and a fragment of a marble mortar.

{10} Finds included stratified groups of pottery from the mid C12th to C14th, two large fragments of a mid C13th stone mortar, a hone, a fragment of bone toggle and a rolled bronze strip.
