Full Description
{1} Fieldname: Gravel Pit Field. The cropmarks may extend eastwards into the field in the north-east angle of the crossroads.
{2} 20 coins found during the early 19th century, plus pottery, foundations, pavements and fireplaces spread over more than 10 ha. More recent fieldwork has produced conclusive evidence of Roman occupation. In 1960 a "samian urn", three coins and pottery and tile were found at SP59946510.
Since 1960 large quantities of pottery, mainly of C2nd and C3rd date, and including Samian ware, have been noted over a wide area. Air photographs show cropmarks extending across the two fields north-east of Thrupp Lodge, though none clearly reveals all the details. There is certainly a series of overlapping enclosures and ditches. Interpretation plan.
{7} (SP 59946510) Samian urn. 3 c bronze coins, RB sherds and tiles found April 1960 by Mr A T Climpt.
{8} Finder not located. Indicated site under grass.
{9} 'Mr. Radburne of Thrupp Grounds [SP 603 653] showed me some twenty coins (two Hadrian, two Pius, mostly Constantinian and later) found on or near his farm, and told me he had met with foundations, pavements and fireplaces in the fields'.
{10} Foundations and pottery were found over an area of c. 30 acres in the fields around 'Mr. Edmunds's House, known as Thorpe or Thrupp grounds. On visiting the site Baker found a large, inverted, cinerary urn 'in Mr. Radburn's pit' about 3 ft. below the surface.
[The foundations etc. may be connected with the D.M.V. of Thorpe - see SP 56 NE 12. 'Mr. Radburn's pit' may be at SP 5964 6516. The neighbouring Thrupp Lodge was tenanted by William Edmonds in 1849. (Tithe Apportionment); Thrupp Grounds was occupied by John Radburn, and the field referred to was known as Gravel Pit Field.]
{11} Northampton Museum have no information concerning this site and the occupiers of Thrupp Grounds are fairly new to the area. The complete farm is under cultivation - no finds are known of.
