Full Description

{1} Manor house. Probably late C14 with C16, C17 and C20 additions. Regular coursed ironstone with Colleyweston slate roof. Originally open hall plan, now T-shape. 2 storeys with attic. Main front of 3-window range of 2-, 3- and 4-light stone mullion windows with leaded lights. Central C20 door has moulded stone surround. Gabled cross wings breaks forward to right. Large 3-stage buttress to left of centre. Ashlar gable parapets, kneelers and finial and stone stack at ridge. 2 bays to left are remains of the medieval hall. Elevation to right of main front has 2-window range of stone mullion windows with large buttress between. Rear has gabled cross wing to left with one C14 two-light window with Y-tracery to first floor. Probably originally forming part of the medieval solar. Central gabled staircase projection is probably C16. Similar gable to far right is early C20. Single-storey C20 extensions to left. Interior: entrance hall follows line of screens passage and has 2 C14 arch-head openings in wall to right. Room to left of entrance was originally the hall, now sub-divided and has open fireplace with bressumer, probably inserted C16. Room to right of entrance has open fireplace with bressumer and with C17 fireplace with 4-centred head. Room to rear right of entrance also has open fireplace with bressumer. Stone spiral staircase from ground to first floor and wooden spiral to attic. First floor room to rear right has C17 fireplace with 4-centred head. (Buildings of England: Northamptonshire, p.415).

{2} 16th century house. Cross passage at east end and c.1300 2 bay cross wing. Date stone of 1619. Difficult to ascertain how much medieval fabric survives due to 17th century modifications. Possibly the original manor until it was confiscated in 1465

{6} Programme of building recording undertaken during the removal of a late 20th-century, stone-built fire surround from an early 17th century fire-place opening within the drawing room. The moulded timber lintel over the drawing room fire-place is intact and appears to date to the early 17th century but no other architectural elements were revealed during the removal of the modern fire-surround.

{7} Much altered in the 17th century when the hall was largely removed, but a big buttress remains of the south side. Alterations and additions by Gotch, 1893 and 1907.
