Abstract/Summary

A limited programme of historic building recording at the Old House, Lower Road, Stoke Albany, Northamptonshire was undertaken during the removal of a late 20th century, stone-built fire surround from an early 17th century fire-place opening within the drawing room. The Old House is a grade II* listed building, thought to have been constructed in the 14th century as an end hall type house. This would have consisted of a large open hall, separated by a screens passage from the domestic cross-wing. The original form of the building is identifiable within the modern layout, which appears to have changed very little since the early 17th century, when the first floor structure was inserted into the open hall along with the fire-place and chimney stack, and the stair tower added. The moulded timber lintel over the drawing room fire-place is intact and appears to date to the early 17th century but no other architectural elements were revealed during the removal of the modern fire-surround.
