Full Description

{1} A very large collection of finds made by P W Martin during archaeological field survey with D N Hall in Northamptonshire and the Soke of Peterborough, Cambs, between 1974 and 1980 was given to Northampton Museum (D.1.1981). Includes sherds of Iron Age to medieval date from Brixworth.

{2} Derived from survey of parish but no NGR given.

{3} (SP7471) A large collection of pottery obtained through field survey. Brixworth is situated on the edge of the Northamptonshire Uplands on sand with ironstone geology. A survey carried out during 1978 on a field by field basis retrieved material as evidence of occupation remains. All periods up to the saxon were investigated although only the Saxon settlement pattern has been described in detail [in this report]. The results of the survey are illustrated in fig. 1 and table 1. There is a large degree of settlement to the west of the present village all on ironstone soil. A total of 19 sites were identified all seem to have been domestic. The pattern of settlement is not very dense and areas of Saxon occupation are well defined. To the east of the survey area is scarp were there is also a considerable earthwork. This is in the location of the eastern boundary of the medieval inclosure called 'Nord Lynch'. The settlement pattern offers support to the claim that Brixworth may be synonymous with the site of Clofesho although this is not conclusive. The survey has also accounted for three pagan Saxon cemeteries. There is a Roman site to the south-west that produced some Saxon sherds (SP735682) suggesting some degree of continuity in the area. The site of the Manor of Wolfage is well preserved and clearly located in a strong defensive position. The Saxon settlement pattern of Brixworth was different from that of the present day and dating evidence from the pottery shows that the dispersed Saxon sites were abandoned before the ninth century.
