Full Description

{1} Fieldwalking undertaken in October 1992 by Northampton Archaeological Unit Contracts Section; 232 struck flints were recovered, as well as 4 sherds of medieval pottery and 1 fragment of melted glass; concentrations of flint were at the quoted NGR; they appear to suggest the presence of a Neolithic or Bronze Age site.

{2} Fields 9/10. Four transects were walkined along the bypass route, other than where early C20th quarrying had taken place. The large number of struck flints (232) would suggest the presence of a prehistoric (possibly Neolithic or Bronze Age) site towards the centre of the field ('Site 8').

{3} The majority of flints collected by fieldwork appear to be of Bronze Age date. No features were found upon excavation and it is likely that those flints coming from the Iron Age features are residual in nature. A total of 103 lithics were collected during the excavations. These include a patinated backed blade fragment considered to be probably Upper Palaeolithic. A Mesolithic component including an opposed patform bladelet core and 4 bladelet fragments, a fragment of a bifacial piece which may be part of a laurel leaf/ spear point and is probably Neolithic; the majority of the assemblage includes 13 retouched pieces, 69 flakes, 6 shatter fragments and 4 cores and are considered to be Bronze Age.
