Monument record 6684/0/1 - Possible Bronze Age Round Barrow, Ringstead Quarry
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
A low circular earthwork was visible on the floodplain. It was partially excavated prior to quarrying, although only a possibly modern animal burial and a few flint flakes were found. A central depression suggested previous disturbance. A ditch, 24m in diameter, was located beneath the outer edge of the mound.

Full Description
{1} Dish-shaped earthwork with max height of 0.3m and a diameter of 35-40m. A ditch 1.30m in depth with a diameter of 24m was observed at the outer edge of the earthwork. An area where a slight depression suggested previous disturbance was excavated - animal burial of recent origin and a few flint flakes were only finds. Possibly prehistoric mound or barrow - no dating evidence.
{2} A circular earthwork max height 0.3m x 35-40m diameter was visible on the flat flood plain. Prior to quarrying an area some 8.5m x 6.5m was excavated in the centre of the mound where a slight depression suggested previous disturbance. A probable recent animal burial was found, along with a few flint flakes. Subsequent observation during quarrying revealed a ditch some 24m in diameter and 1.3m deep beneath the outer edge of the earthwork. No dating evidence was forthcoming but it may have been a prehistoric mound, possibly a barrow. Plan Fig 6.25.
{3}Minor rescue excavation undertaken in 1976; a round mound and ring ditch; low saucer shaped mound was 36m in diameter; the broad 1.4m deep ditch enclosed the 20m diameter platform situated beneath the mound; no evidence of date or function was found; excavation by D. Jackson; quarried; ; SP 977751 (1);
