Full Description
{1} T.C. Welsh describes a hollow way rising in a curve from the river bank linking with a short length of apparent cambered way with side-ditch and banks, flanking the north side of Ordnance Road. The hollow way may relate to traffic from the village pre-dating Ordnance Road.
{2} On the north side of Ordnance Road the remains of a possible hollow way runs north towards the river then curves to run eastwards parallel with the river. A trench across the feature exposed a very broad shallow rounded cut. At the centre of the ditch was a narrow linear cut. It seems likely that it is a silted up ditch that relates to some form of boundary drainage activity. Pottery dating to the 15th-16th century and 18th-19th century was found in the upper fill.
Subsequent to the trial trench excavation the earthwork now seems more likely to be a silted up ditch that relates to some form of boundary drainage activity for fields. The ditch is perhaps a continuation of a north to south boundary ditch located to the south-west of the development
