Full Description
{1} "..for a long distance traces of road or way were noticed and after a while just where quarry workings ran adjoining Co-Op estate workmen found large area covered with pebbles and neatly laid in cement .. It seemed as if pavement must have been Roman road continuing as it did c.150yds before its course took turn to east and cleared workings .. That it is really a road is more likely as it runs exactly course of old road indicated on plan of 1728.."; depth of pebbles and cement in places was more than 2ft thick; traces of herringbone stone foundations to road in 1 spot.
{2} Monument numbering pre March 1999 was equated with 98/1 which is a north-east to south-west running road recorded at Stanion & Weekley; whilst this road should have run on to Kettering Roman town its alignment would not appear to concur with records made during 1909-11 quarrying & it is more likely that road recorded during at this time equates with 3960/1 as later recorded by Bellamy etc; this would appear to be further substantiated by reference to C18th map (poresumably Eyres) showing road alignments which clearly follow route of 3960/1.
