Full Description
{1} Beneath a well-cultivated topsoil was a layer of dark brown loam containing C19th brick fragments, mortar, gravels and domestic refuse. The foundations of a brick wall and a shallow pit were cut into the loam. The wall comprised three courses of brick set on undressed limestone blocks. The wall probably formed the edging of a path which connected cottage 2 to the existing shed and toilets. The materials and method of construction used in the wall was similar to that of cottage 2. The pit contained ashy loam with pieces of coal and probably dates to the C19th.
At the norther end of the trench was a large pit containing pottery of the late C17th to early C18th with one piece of medieval shelly ware. The extent of the pit was not dteremined as it went out of the boundaries of the trench. The pit was dug to over 2m but the base was not excavated due to concern over the stability of the section. The pit had vertical sides and was cut into the natural Marlstone rock.
At the southern end of the trench was a stone wall foundation and a shallow pit. The wall consisted of five courses of undressed stone blocks bonded in clay. The purpose of the wall is uncertain but may simply represent a boundary. The pit contained no pottery but had small pieces of coal and brick suggesting a C19th date.
