Full Description

{1} Above the natural alluvial layers were subsoil-type deposits of sandy silts that contained fragments of pottery and slag. These layers may be agricultural soils, though the lack of abrasion on the pottery fragments, and the location of the site next to a stream, may suggest that the area served for pasture, rather than arable purposes. All of the artefacts could have been introduced through dumping or, more probably, manure scattering. It is thought that, although medieval pottery was present, the presence of C19th ceramics indicate that the layer was still being formed until recently.
