Full Description

Note: suggestion of cropmark enclosure ditches and pits on Google Earth imagery.

{1} The pottery consists of colour coated and grey wares, mortaria, plain samian, a samian mortarium sherd, part of a castor box and rouletted pottery and possibly Roman roof tile. The pottery is distributed along a wide bank of earth which seems composed of a mixture of clay, sandstone, ironstone and a large amount of iron slag. Behind the mound to the north-west, between it and the stream, is a hollowed-out area.

{2} Fieldwalking found a dense scatter of Roman pottery and slag

{3} Roman pottery, mainly of Nene Valley type, including part of a Castor Box and some rouletted sherds, but also with some samian, has been found. The pottery lies around a wide earthen bank which contains iron slag.

{?} The bank is possibly the warren identified as site number 2801. (NEED TO CHECK THIS)

{4} Iron Age and Roman site: significant find scatter indicating settlement. Only just looked at, may be much larger and would expect medieval and Saxon. The hollow way to the south from Glapthorn makes for this field and it may once have been the vill centre. Much iron slag to the north next the brook.

{5} Fieldwalking identified a stone area with Romano-British pot sherds, including colour-coated wares and grey wares and samian. One sherd of a samian mortarium and a colour-coated castor box. Rouletted colour-coated ware and roof tile fragments. The pottery was scattered along a wide bank with "large lumps" of iron slag in considerable quantity. Behind the mound to the north-west and between it and the stream is a hollow area.

{6} Fieldwalking recovered 1 Romano-British pot sherd and 1 worked flint. Follow up work produced 2 Romano-British colour-coated pot sherds and 1 grey ware pot sherd.
