Full Description
{1}The features identified by geophysical survey and excavation represent a low status rural settlement, probably with an agriculturally based subsistence economy.
A sub-circular enclosure noted during geophysical survey. A trench located NW-SE across the ditch revealed a double ditch 2.30m wide with steep sides and a rounded base. The single fill was a mid-reddish brown clayey silt. A rectilinear enclosure was revealed during geophysical survey. Trench 9 was placed across its ditch. A linear feature aligned north-south was revealed in the trench, 1.56m wide x 0.60m deep with a rounded base. Two sherds of 1st centruy AD shell-gritted pottery (of Iron Age type) were recovered from the fill of the ditch. 23 postholes were identified in Trench 9. Alignment suggested that they could form the corner of a rectangular or sub-rectangular structure. A number of overlying pits and ditches identified by geophysics were confirmed by excavation, many with Iron Age or Romano-British pottery primarily from the C1st-2nd AD (Trenches 9, 10 and 11). Accumulation deposits of pottery, charcoal, fired clay, iron objects and possible Roman roof tile were also found in trench 10.
