Abstract/Summary
The site is located within the grounds of Glendon Hall, approximately 3 miles northwest from Kettering. The topography of the areas investigated were generally flat, or slightly undulating, consisting of fields and small gardens. Soils of the area belong to the Banbury association from a parent of Jurassic and cretaceous ironstone. A Deserted Medieval Settlement survives at Glendon, formally known as Clendon. Excavations carried out in 2004 recorded 11 inhumations in and around a barn conversion. It is assumed that they are associated with a church, dedicated to St. Helen, but its location is unknown. The aims of the survey were to define the extents of the DMV, locate the church and any other archaeological remains relating to Glendon Hall. This survey forms part of a wider investigation being carried out by Channel 4’s Time Team The fields containing the DMV were investigated through gradiometry and the results show a complex of ditches, enclosures and pits with Area 2. The data also show a range of activity from prehistoric through to Medieval, as a ring ditch has been identified along with medieval tenement blocks. Area 3 also produced ditch responses that may be associated with the anomalies within Area 2. The geophysical survey failed to find any evidence for the lost church but this is not surprising given the very difficult ground conditions. Small areas of resistance survey proved difficult to interpret, but they show zones of both high and low resistance, the majority of which may be due to topographical and garden features. However archaeological significance cannot be ruled out. No structural remains were identified with the GPR data and the nature of ancient burials and the local geology made the detection of grave cuts a difficult prospect. In addition no signs of foundations for the church were apparent. The concrete floor of the barn appeared to mask the majority of features below it.
