Description

Church. Late C13. Squared coursed lias with plain tile and slate roofs. Chancel, double nave and west door. Chancel, south elevation of 2-window range of 3-light windows with intersecting tracery. East window similar. North elevation of one-window range with 3-light reticulated window. Single-light square headed windows at low level to each side of chancel. Gabled roof has ashlar parapets with corbel table, probably C19 under finial. South nave elevation of 2-window range of 3-light windows with reticulated tracery. Gabled porch between windows probably restored in C19, has double chamfered arch. West tower built into end of naves of 3 stages. West elevation has open arcade at ground level of double chamfered arch supported on squared buttressing. Triple chamfered pointed arch to west door has double shafting. Single lancet in second stage of west elevation. 2-light Decorated bell chamber openings in third stage have reticulated tracery. Castellated parapet. Interior: Double chamfered chancel arch. 3-bay central arcade separates the two naves and is of double chamfered arches supported on 2 tall circular piers with circular abaci. The east arch springs from the wall directly above the centre of the double chamfered tower arch. Half of the tower projects into the naves. Roof probably C19. Stained glass in east window. Piscina to right of altar has dog tooth decoration. Piscina in south nave wall. Also holy water stoup in niche by south door has square top with herringbone decoration on round base. Two niches, one with square and one with arched heads in north nave wall. Remnants of C19 wall painting in chancel. Perpendicular vestry screen at rear of south nave and similar pulpit. Studded plank door probably C17. The Church was in the gift of the Gilbertine Order. (Buildings of England: Northamptonshire, p.245).
