Help with searching

Please read the below for help with our search tools.

Simple search

You can choose which set of records you would like to search:

  • Monuments- can represent archaeological sites, artefact scatters, buildings or landscapes

  • Events- records of activities which can include excavations, evaluations, watching briefs, geophysical surveys etc

  • Designations- records of statutory and other designations, normally a legal or registered status, such as a Listed Building, Scheduled Monument, Locally Listed Building, Conservation Area etc

  • Sources- records of information about published sources and archive material that provide information about the Monuments, Events and Designations

The simple search is a free text option, which means that the system will search all records for the word or phrase typed in. There is a tick box to choose an exact match for what you have entered. This option is good for a quick search, but may return many more results. For structured searches you can use the advanced search tools.

Advanced search

The advanced search tools allow you to refine your search. You can construct searches by monument and find type terms which are governed by standardised thesauri used by every HER in the country. The thesaurus terms are agreed and published by the Forum for Information Standards in Heritage (FISH). You may find it useful to look at the FISH Thesauri when using these tools.

You can also refine your search using Parish and Time Period by using the drop down menus. You can choose a start and end period for your search to fall within and also use the tick box to define whether you want the record to overlap those time periods or fall entirely within them.
